My Growing Love Affair With SEO & Telling People What To Do

My Growing Love Affair With SEOIn the past few months I’ve noticed that it’s quicker for me to create a site for someone from scratch, rather than move their existing site into something either new or improved. My website is the perfect example of that. In an earlier post this year, I talked about implementing some different strategies on my website. Most of which I’ve either modified or slashed altogether.

Backlinking

I started off using Pat Flynn’s “The Backlinking Strategy That Works.” While I know that his method works, it was way too time consuming for me. So I just started writing articles to create backlinks using Unique Article Wizard. This worked great! Within a few weeks I had hundreds of different backlinks indexed and pointing back to my website. Read more

Should Your Web Designer Host Your Website?

Should Your Web Designer Host Your Website?

Most people don’t know the first thing about owning their own website. So when their web designer, who knows a whole heap of a lot about websites offers to host their domain, most people agree to have them host it. After all, they don’t know the first thing about finding a web host or how to set an account up. It’s something better left to the web designer.

When I started working at the company I work for now, the company owner wanted me to make some changes to their existing website. My computer was set up with Dreamweaver to automatically save to the FTP so it was a fairly easy process, until they bought me a new computer. I didn’t have the FTP password (FTP is what you need to transfer files to your website). So I did what anyone would do and I contacted the “web hosting” company that hosts the company website. The company website is hosted by the original web designer.

I’m on Page One of Yahoo and Page Two of Bing!

I’m so excited to announce that my site is on the first page of Yahoo and the second page of Bing for one of my main keywords! This is super motivational for me, as it shows that my efforts have been working. It also shows me the huge difference between Google’s keyword ranking methods as opposed to Bing & Yahoo’s. All I’ve really done up until this point has been optimize my site for the keywords I want to target. I’ve started on some backlinking strategies, but they haven’t been fully implemented.

According to Market Samurai, this keyword should generate approximately 61 clicks per day if I were on the number 1 spot in Google. Which to most doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I wanted to start with a smaller keywords that would get me some traffic but wouldn’t be super competitive as I learn all about this SEO web designing stuff.

Seeing my website already on the first and second page of Yahoo and Bing has definitely motivated me to continue what I’m doing. It feels like confirmation that I’m on the right path.

My Business Plans for 2013 & Using The Backlinking Strategy That Works

Business Plans for 2013

Several years ago, while I was working in marketing for an online travel website, I decided that it would be the year that my business would take off and I would quit my day job. Little did I know that a few months later I would be let go… because it was assumed that I could not move to work in the home office of the company (I had been working at home for several years, but now there was an issue?) And they were right to assume that. But my point is that I was actually forced to make my business work.

At that point I had not build up enough clientele to design as a full time job, so to supplement my income I worked as a night club promoter as well. It was fast, easy money, and allowed me to network with other club promoters to gain a significant amount of business. Read more

A Few Website Changes and My First Niche Site

I made a few minor changes to the site this weekend. When I redesigned my site I removed a lot of old content that I didn’t feel met my standard of modern graphic design. Whether the designs were outdated, or something I put up simply to have a lot of work up at one point, I took a lot of work off. I did this but failed to revise any of the current content. And so I’m spending the next few days on updating all of the content on the site. For now here’s what I’ve done:

Design Changes

As a graphic designer if something is 2px off it bugs me to no end. So the fact that the white space on my website was so close to the text was driving me crazy. So I made that a little wider. I also changed some of the fonts around. There are still some changes I need to make, as I always get tired of what I make for myself design wise. As far as my portfolio goes, I want to keep it as simple as possible because I want to showcase my designs, but then again sometimes too simple bores me. Read more
